It’s not always easy to get away with a toddler, so we decided to take a little spring break staycation here in Columbus!
After seeing so many spring back posts on social media, I decided to take my own spring break last week! Of course, as a stay at home mom of a 2-year old, this was not a usual spring break, but we loved our Columbus staycation just the same!
Instead of eating at all of our usual places or staying in, I decided we’d get out a little more this week to try out some new places to eat, play and have fun around town!
Here are some of the new places and activities we tried out:
This was such a fun adventure for Emily and I. They have a preschool story time on Thursdays and Saturdays at 10:00. It’s held in their bird watching room, which has the most beautiful views of the city skyline as well as several bird feeders. While I could have sat there for quite some time just admiring the view, Emily has a short attention span these days and was ready to move onto the outdoors!
After story time, we explored some of the grounds including a small pond, water tower, rock climbing wall and playground. It was a nice, spring day and we took our time wandering around. If you have a little one who enjoys the outdoors, I definitely suggest checking it out!
Located less than an hour down the road, Aha! Childrens Museum in Lancaster is a must see if you have a little one! It’s just like some of the play cafe’s I’ve been to, but much larger! With two separate rooms for play, I think Emily could have stayed there all day!
The list of activities they have could go on forever! Here are a few of the things your little ones can play on:
- A fire truck and dump truck to ride on, complete with dress up clothes
- A play stage complete with a piano and microphone for your little one to put on their own show
- Vet Clinic, complete with stuffed animals, medical supplies like a stethoscope and light board to look at play x-rays.
- A grocery store with play food and a pizza oven
- A water station with smocks for the kids to wear to prevent their clothes from getting (too) wet. They even have little seats for younger ones to sit in and splash around.
I could go on and on, but you should really just check it out for yourself to see all they have to offer. I had to wrangle Emily for a while to get her to go and only could do so when I promised a smoothie from The Well afterwards, more on this below!
Newly opened and located in Clintonville, this is a must-try for any local food lovers! They’re a small café, which offers fresh baked breads, pastries and lunch items. I went without Emily on this adventure. I tried the cinnamon monkey bread, which was melt-in-your-mouth delicious! I really don’t even have words for how much I enjoyed it, but trust me and try them out – you won’t be disappointed!
Emily and I love the smoothies, so while we were downtown to visit Grange Audobon, I couldn’t leave without a stop at Alchemy! Emily and I split the PB Power Smoothie, which was delicious! After Emily took one sip she said “Mmmm, peanut butter!” My thoughts exactly, kiddo!
We didn’t try any of their food, but they had all kinds of fun toast options, power balls and sandwiches to try. Next time we go I’m definitely trying out one of these tasty-looking items!
The Well is a small café located just a block from Aha! in Lancaster. We specifically went for a smoothie and they did not disappoint! We tried the Strawberry Banana smoothie and it was delicious! Oh, and can I talk about the glass it was served in? See the photo of Emily, below. It’s an old fashioned mason jar, complete with metal straw – too cute!
They also have a large play area with this awesome play house, shown below. Emily could play, while I sat and enjoyed a mini-break after our adventures at Aha! Definitely add this to your itinerary if you make the trip to Lancaster!
I’ve been wanting to try this coffee shop forever! Not only have I heard great reviews of their food and coffee, but one of the owners is a writer with me at The Columbus Moms Blog.
It was a short drive from downtown and easy to find. It was suggested to try the Canary Island Espresso and let me tell you, it might just be the best coffee drink I’ve ever had. It’s a regular latte with sweetened condensed milk at the bottom – super tasty! As you sip and stir, it slowly gets sweeter. I definitely suggest trying them out if you’re looking for a new coffee shop!
What a fun week we had! What would you do if you took a Columbus staycation?
