Add a little extra excitement to your Goldfish Swim School session with these fun goldfish themed food ideas!
Emily recently started taking swim lessons at Goldfish Swim School. In order to add even more fun to our weekly lessons, I thought I’d come up with some goldfish themed food ideas. Let me tell you, Emily just loved these!
Ever since I got into Dr. Seuss Day I’ve been all about fun foods for Em. I find it adds a little more excitement to meal time when there’s something fun on her plate! After we signed up for swim lessons, I started thinking about that cute goldfish mascot and I’ve been jotting down food ideas ever since!
Here are a few easy recipes to add even more excitement to those weekly swim lessons and even if you aren’t taking swim lessons, I’m sure your kids will like these fun food ideas. Enjoy!
Goldfish Jell-O Jigglers
There’s two options here. You can definitely just use orange or blue Jell-O mixes at the store and cut the finished product into goldfish shapes or try this homemade version, below. Don’t worry, this homemade version is almost as easy as the boxed version!
2 cups orange juice (I prefer Simply Orange)
1 packet plain gelatin
Pour 1/2 cup of OJ in a heat proof bowl. Add the gelatin mixture and stir to combine. Set aside for 5 minutes for the gelatin to soften.
Heat the remaining 1 1/2 cups OJ over medium high heat until small bubbles appear around the sides. Pour into the bowl of softened gelatin and stir to combine. Pour into an 8×8 (or 9×9) pan. Refrigerate until set, about 3 hours.
Using a fish cookie cutter, cut out shapes with jello in the pan. I used a spoon to remove the jello around the fish, then slid an off-set spatula (or fork) under the jello and lifted out the fish. Add a candy eye and blueberry bubbles for extra fun!
Note: This jello is a little more delicate than normal boxed jello. Don’t worry if the fishy shapes fall apart, the kids (and even you!) will enjoy them just the same!
Little Swimmer Smoothie Bowl
I wanted to create a blue smoothie, but couldn’t think of any natural way to get it blue without adding food coloring, which I know many of you might not want. After spending way too much time thinking about blue smoothies I came to the conclusion that kids may not actually mind if it’s not blue like the water, right? I decided going the orange route would be easier, so I slightly adapted my Orange Vitamin-C Smoothie into a smoothie bowl.
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup frozen mango
1/2 cup frozen pineapple
3 Tbs. milk
2 Tbs. orange juice
Add all ingredients to a food processor (or high speed blender). Blend until combined and smooth. Add additional milk and/or orange juice if you prefer it more drinkable, like a smoothie. Pour into a bowl and place a few graham flavored goldfish treats on top!
These sandwiches make for a fun meal after swim lessons. Emily loves when her food is in fun shapes, so she was pleasantly surprised to find her sandwich turned into a little fishy!
Emily loves pb+banana sandwiches, but you could use whatever fillings your child enjoys! All you have to do is cut the bread, meat and cheese with a fish cookie cutter. It looks best if you cut it after assembling, but if your sandwich is pretty tall, it will work better to cut each item individually and then stack them together. *One note if you want to make a grilled cheese – make sure the cheese does not go all the way to the edge of the sandwich or it will ooze out while cooking.
Fish Food Snack Mix
I love snack mixes and Emily does too! These two easy ideas can be taken on the road to enjoy before or after your swim lessons. Emily goes through phases of whether she enjoys sweet or savory, so to appease whatever mood she may be in, I’ve created two versions. Of course, you can add whatever you want to make a snack mix, so feel free to adapt these ideas to whatever your child likes! Here are two mixes I recently came up with. I use equal amounts of each ingredient:
Whole Wheat Cinnamon Goldfish
Tiny Pretzel Twists
Chocolate or Cinnamon Cheerios
Whole Wheat Cheddar Goldfish
Chex Cereal (I used Rice Chex)
Mini Cheese Cracker Sandwiches
